To be eligible for the award, each development — which could be a component, machine, structure, system, end product or procedure — must embody the application of new technology or the innovative application of an older technology. The technology must be new to the whole industry, not just to an individual company. In addition, for the 2017 awards the development must have been first made available for purchase or ordering during the 2016 calendar year.
Farm equipment manufacturers are responding to and, in some cases, anticipating farmers’ needs in designing new products. This was evident in the many new developments rolled out during the 2016 Farm Progress Show.
Not only did Farm Equipment editors carry out their traditional duties of digging for the newest and most innovative products at this year’s Farm Progress Show, but this time we dug a little deeper. This year we spent additional time with exhibitors to get their take on what’s driving new equipment designs and developments and how they’re responding to what they’re hearing from their dealers and customers.
Chain conveyors, also called en-masse conveyors, are known to offer durability, low relative horsepower requirements and high material moving capacities. The Double Barrel chain conveyor system from Sudenga combines the benefits of the traditional chain conveyor but can be used where farmers might have previously used a traditional, but harder on the grain and less durable, round or u-trough style auger.
Innovative Products of America (IPA) announces the #7863 Grease Joint Rejuvenator that lubricates and unclogs bearings, pinned joints, kingpins, shafts, bushings, etc. It can be used on all farm, construction, lawn, excavating and manufacturing equipment as well as trucks, trailers, marine drive trains, milling machines, lathes and any place Zerk fittings are used.
Harper Adams Univ. in the U.K. completed a three-year study involving Michelin's Ultraflex Technology IF (Increased Flexion) and VF (Very High Flexion) tires that demonstrated a yield increase of up to 4% compared to standard radial agriculture tires.

New for 2016, NDY Mfg. has introduced the Center Fill Ladder Extension for John Deere planters. The ladder is fully collapsible, making it easy to access or fold away as needed, with multiple positions for when the planter is in different heights, from fully raised to fully lowered.
This inaugural episode in plans for a new docuseries introduces father-son duo Ward and Marc McConnell who’ve led farm equipment manufacturer Art’s Way Manufacturing and other businesses. Filmed in Texas in 2017, this 13-minute video is one of 25 in-person interviews on the legacies of family-run equipment manufacturers collected over several years. This pilot is being early-released to mark the 1-year anniversary of Ward’s passing in May 2021.
