Planted Acres for Corn, Soybeans, Wheat Up Slightly for 2013

Today, USDA released its crop acreage planted report and acreage of all major commodities crops is estimated to be up slightly from 2012 except for cotton. Corn planted area for all purposes in 2013 is estimated at 97.4 million acres, up slightly from last year. This represents the highest planted acreage in the United States since 1936 when an estimated 102 million acres were planted. Growers expect to harvest 89.1 million acres for grain, up 2% from last year.

Crop 96% Emerged; 92% of Soybeans Planted

Corn planting in the top 18 corn-producing states is complete as farmers finished with a flurry during the past 2 weeks, according to USDA's Crop Progress report issued today. As for corn crop conditions, 8% of the crop was in poor or very poor condition, much improved over last year when 14% of corn was in poor recovery poor condition. Corn in good or excellent condition was 65%, compared to 56% last year.

U.S. Farmers Made Big Strides in Corn Planting Last Week

Give them a few good days and U.S. farmers can do amazing things when it comes to getting their corn crop in the ground. This afternoon, USDA reported that for the 18 states that accounted for 92% of the corn acreage last year, 71% of corn acres were planted as of yesterday, May 19. While it doesn't match up to last year's 95% that was planted as of that date, it certainly is a big leap from a week earlier when only 28% of corn acres had been planted.

First, in its World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates (WASDE) report, USDA lowered its price estimates on corn, soybeans and wheat for the 2013 crop, a bearish signal for the industry. Later in the day, the Assn. of Equipment Manufacturers reported that U.S. and Canada tractor and combine sales were up pretty much across the board in March.
