Crop 96% Emerged; 92% of Soybeans Planted

Corn planting in the top 18 corn-producing states is complete as farmers finished with a flurry during the past 2 weeks, according to USDA's Crop Progress report issued today. As for corn crop conditions, 8% of the crop was in poor or very poor condition, much improved over last year when 14% of corn was in poor recovery poor condition. Corn in good or excellent condition was 65%, compared to 56% last year.

You Win Some and You Lose Some

First, in its World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates (WASDE) report, USDA lowered its price estimates on corn, soybeans and wheat for the 2013 crop, a bearish signal for the industry. Later in the day, the Assn. of Equipment Manufacturers reported that U.S. and Canada tractor and combine sales were up pretty much across the board in March.

Brazil Now World's Leading Exporter of Soybeans

In recent years, Brazil's production of soybeans and soybean products have risen sharply as most areas of Brazil have seen rapid increases in area planted to soybeans and rising yields. Relatively high profits for soybean producers are expected to lead to an average increase in planted area of about 2% per year over the next decade, with increasing soybean plantings in the Cerrado region and expansion extending into the Legal Amazon region of Brazil.

U.S. Crop Conditions Continue to Decline

Yesterday, USDA released its weekly Crop Progress report that showed that the lack of rain throughout most major agricultural regions continue to negatively impact U.S. crops. For the eighth consecutive week, USDA said that the condition of the U.S. corn crop was worse than it was during the previous week.
