The term “artificial intelligence” has generated pages of dystopian copy surrounding the displacement of jobs and the dehumanization of the workplace, but on the ground, in farm fields, AI or “machine learning” is proving to be an efficient ally of growers combatting weeds and keeping expenses in check.
The condition of the U.S. corn and crops deteriorated in the past week, according to USDA’s August 30 Crop Progress report. And of the two largest corn and soybean producing states, Illinois is far ahead of neighboring Iowa in terms of the health of its crops.
USDA is reporting that as of Oct. 8, 82% of corn acres were “mature” and 89% of soybeans were “dropping leaves.” At this point, corn’s progress is lagging last year at this time (92%) and the 5-year average (87%) for this date.
The condition of the U.S. corn and soybean crops as of Aug. 7 varied very little from the that seen in the past several weeks, which means both crops could be on pace for record-setting harvests.
According to USDA’s Crop Progress report for July 24, 79% of corn is silking. This compares with 71% silking one year ago on this date and 5-year average of 70%.
A small percentage of U.S. corn acres are reported to be silking (6%) and soybean acres blooming (9%), according to USDA's Crop Progress report for June 27.
With 98% of U.S. corn acres planted, USDA is reporting that 90% have also emerged as of June 5, according to USDA. The 98% planted compares with 94% a week earlier and 99% a year ago. The 5-year average for this date is 97%.
