While supply and demand imbalances continue to plague many ag machinery dealers, the three publicly held North American farm equipment dealership groups are reporting progress in reducing their equipment backlogs. On the other hand, it has come at a price as dealers report that ongoing low used equipment values offer little or no profit margin.
“The impact of driverless tractors on farm operations will be dramatic, and the vehicles hold the potential to provide a huge boost to productivity,” says Manoj Sahi of Tractica. In a report issued on Sept. 4, following the introduction of Case IH and New Holland’s concept autonomous tractors at the Farm Progress Show on Aug. 30, Tractica said it expects rapid growth of driverless farm vehicles starting about 2020.
The revenue stream from the sale of precision farming equipment is expected to be as good as, or better than, what dealers saw in 2015. According to Precision Farming Dealer’s 2016 Benchmark Study, dealers share a cautiously optimistic outlook for total precision farming revenue in 2016, with 88.9% of the total respondents predicting similar or improved results from the 2015 totals (10% up 8% or more, 40% up 2-7%, 38.9% little or no change from 2015 levels).
While most no-till farmers report being profitable in 2015, most are also planning to reduce spending during the 2016 growing season in an attempt to stay that way. In all likeli¬hood, equipment purchases will take the biggest hit as no-tillers plan to cut back on overall spending in the year ahead.
While farm equipment sales remain in the doldrums, U.S. and Canadian dealers’ sentiments about business conditions improved slightly according to the results of Ag Equipment Intelligence’s most recent Dealer Sentiments & Business Conditions Update survey. Here’s what dealers are reporting about current business conditions for ag machinery.
After what looked like some progress at the end of last year, dealers in the February Dealer Sentiments & Business Conditions Update survey reported that both new and used farm equipment inventories sitting on their lots remains “too high.”
When Deere & Co. announced its first-quarter 2016 earnings last Friday (Feb. 19), it reported that its worldwide equipment sales declined 15% compared to the same period of 2015. The company also said that it expects fiscal year 2016 sales to be down 10% year-over-year vs. down 7% in its previous forecast. For the U.S. and Canada, the company says it anticipates retail sales to be down 15-20%, with large ag retail sales down by as much as 25-30%.
Of the 12 product categories included in Ag Equipment Intelligence’s monthly Dealer Sentiments survey, only one has consistently shown positive results during the past 12 months when it comes to dealer sales — commercial and consumer equipment.
First the good news on North American used farm equipment inventories: Only 21% of dealers responding to Ag Equipment Intelligence’s most recent Dealer Sentiment & Business Conditions Update survey are reporting their used combine levels as “too high.”
