Capital Tractor Inc., a construction and agricultural equipment dealer, is closing its shop in Latham, New York, and consolidating the business at its headquarters in Greenwich, Washington County.
Capital Tractor is located at 978 Albany Shaker Road.
The company said the closure will create a more streamlined service environment for customers in Greenwich who need construction and agricultural equipment.
The headquarters will have a more comprehensive parts inventory, a bigger staff of service technicians and a better road service fleet.
Capital Tractor President Jamey Gibson said there was too much overhead having two stores 30 miles apart. Sales were less than expected at the Latham store, which opened in 1998.
“It’s not about the recession or anything like that,” Gibson said. “In our business, every car that drives by is not a candidate for a tractor. Every car that drives by a car dealership is a candidate for a car.”
Capital Tractor is auctioning excess rental units, used equipment and tractors and various shop tools at the Latham location on Oct. 9. For more information, go to www.lyonsaution.com.
Prior to the auction, the company is offering a 25 percent discount on in-stock New Holland-branded parts in Latham if paid with cash or check.
Capital Tractor was founded in Troy in 1966 and moved to Greenwich in 1991. The rural location made sense for serving year round and so-called weekend farmers, Gibson said.
When he took over a former New Holland dealership in Latham in 1998 and renamed it Capital Tractor, the family-owned business thought it would boost sales of construction equipment.
As it turns out, the Greenwich headquarters had better sales of construction equipment than Latham, Gibson said.
Although overall sales are down, Gibson said the decline has not been too dramatic.
The seven employees in Latham will be transferred to Greenwich.
Gibson has a tentative deal to lease the 8,000-square-foot building on Albany Shaker Road to another business. The building sits on 3.7 acres.
