John Deere dealer Sweeney Farms in Maybee, Mich., closed this fall after being in business for 33 years, reports The Monroe News. Customers will have to travel to Tecumseh, Mich., which is about 25 miles from Maybee, or Ohio to find parts or service for their tractors and farm equipment.
According to the newspaper:
Owner Don Sweeney, 72, wears many hats in the community and will continue farming 80 acres that have been in the family’s possession since 1881.
The firm grew to include farm equipment sales plus batteries, tires and John Deere toys also could be purchased at the business. Great Dane lawn motors, Krause equipment and Unverferth tilling equipment also were available. Since 2004, the family has offered a Branson tractor line plus lawn mowers.
The business employed mostly family members. The Sweeneys son-in-law, Ray Leppek, and two grandsons, Nick and Scott, assisted with the dealership and a custom-harvesting business.
