The agricultural community recently lost one of its most passionate advocates for farm safety with the passing of Dale Dobson, longtime director of the Kentucky Department of Agriculture’s Farm Safety Program.
For decades, Dobson dedicated his career to reducing farm injuries and fatalities through education, training, and hands-on demonstrations. Many in the industry will remember his prominent safety exhibit at the National Farm Machinery Show in Louisville, where he showcased the importance of rollover protective structures (ROPS), PTO driveline shielding, and other equipment safety practices. In later years, the exhibit expanded to include health screenings for farmers, reinforcing the connection between farm safety and overall wellness. Dobson’s leadership also helped Kentucky develop nationally recognized grain bin rescue training programs and contributed to a dramatic decline in farm-related fatalities across the state.

In 2012, he welcomed representatives from ASABE, FEMA, and other agricultural organizations to participate in his educational display, creating opportunities to strengthen industry partnerships focused on improving farm safety. Some FEMA members may also remember Dobson bringing his ROPS demonstration unit to a past FEMA meeting in Kansas City, where he shared practical safety education with attendees.
While Dale may not have been a FEMA member, his work aligned closely with the association’s commitment to advancing safe, reliable farm equipment and supporting the people who use it every day. His legacy serves as a reminder that innovation and education remain essential components of protecting farmers and their families.
FEMA extends its condolences to Dale’s family, friends, and colleagues. His passion for agricultural safety and the countless lives impacted by his work will not be forgotten.
