Farm Equipment editors encounter a variety of articles, social media posts, podcasts and videos that offer a unique look at various aspects of our great farm machinery industry. Here is our favorite content from the past week from across the web:

John Deere History — Neil Dahlstrom & Machinery Pete

Our editors were at the John Deere Pavilion (celebrating its 25th year) in Moline, Ill. last week following a dealer peer group meeting across the street. And while we didn’t cross paths with our friends Neil Dahlstrom & Greg “Machinery Pete” Peterson, we tuned in for the on-location Youtube premier on June 25. Neil shares stories from his new book, Tractor Wars, that’s already in its 2nd printing. Farm Equipment ran a chapter from the book last December here and also offers several videos with Neil on his fascinating role as protector of John Deere’s legacy and history.

‘Renewable Diesel Fuels’ – New Opportunity for Soybean Producers

As our editors prepare for an in-depth special report on alternative fuels/power sources for farm machinery, the June 20 “Business of Agriculture” show from Damian Mason was fascinating and timely. Fuel analyst Pete Meyer of S&P Global Commodity Insights explains current refining capacity limitations, policy decision making and the practical outlook for various fuel sources. Much of their discussion was on “renewable diesel fuels” which Meyer explains is a “drop in” product. Renewable diesel fuels, plus sustainable aviation fuels, not only pose an alternative to current and politicized power-source discussions (electric) but also a new market opportunity for soybean growers.

Sukup Mfg. Enters ‘Winner Circle’

Our friends at Agri-Marketing magazine published an item Monday about how Sukup Manufacturing found its way into the Belmont Stakes’ Winner’s Circle. As you’ll see from the photos below, Jockey Irad Ortiz, Jr. and Donegal Racing President Jerry Crawford both sported Sukup headgear. Click on the photos below to get the story. And for more on CEO Steven Sukup, check out our “Ag Entrepreneurs” podcast.

Seed Destruction: Future of Weed Control?

In this short video, Dr. Nick Berry discusses the Seed Terminator, billed as the “future of weed control.” His combine attachment prevents weeds them from existing in the first place, by destroying the seeds during harvest. Berry, who has been recognized as a Tech Disruptor in Australia, is planning to bring his technology to farmers worldwide.

Van Wall Diversifies with Solar Energy

In 2009, Van Wall Equipment, the 2016 Dealership of the Year and Precision Farming Dealer’s 2021 Most Valuable Dealership, expanded its business to include renewable energy after meeting with BTI, a John Deere dealer in central Kansas that was an Endurance Wind distributor. The dealership set up a separate business — Van Wall Energy — to sell the wind turbines, with the primary customer base being hog producers. In this video, Rob McCormick, owner of AgSolutions Inc., shares why he chose to install an solar array on his property and chose to work with Van Wall Energy on the project.

Product of the Week: Solectrac e25 Compact Electric Tractor

Bruce Steele, owner of Winfield Farm, a specialty hog farm in Buellton, Cal., explains how the Solectrac e25 has helped make his life easier and more efficient while contributing to his goal of running an all-solar farm with zero fossil fuel use.
