Lang Diesel Inc. presented a $1,000 check to representatives from Hillsboro Elementary School on Monday after the school won its "Win $1,000 For Your Favorite Charity" Facebook contest, with the goal of replacing the school's deteriorating playground equipment and adding safety surfacing.

"We are thrilled to make our donation to a project with such a large impact on the community, and proud of our followers for voting up such a worthy cause," Shelly Macumber of LDI said. "The school's playground is in desperate need of renovation, and we are happy to play a part in giving those students a fun and safe place to play."

The giveaway was conducted in celebration of LDI's commitment to serving Kansas through its full-service dealerships, product support and a "doing-what-it-takes" attitude to provide customers with the best quality products, parts and service.

"We are so thankful for LDI's kind donation to our playground fund. This is a gift that will go on giving," said Evan Yoder, principal at Hillsboro Elementary School.

"There is no safety surfacing and several places are rusted and unusable," the Facebook campaign read. "Research has shown that children learn better when given the opportunity for quality play time. Adding safety surfacing and replacing the equipment will give our children that opportunity."

The LDI gift was accepted in conjunction with other donations and fundraising efforts to help HES reach its goal of $185,000 to upgrade the playground surfaces and add in new pieces of equipment. Other funds raised this year include a $25,750 grant from the Hillsboro Community Foundation, a recycle-tire grant from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment which will match all funds raised in 2014, and approximately $8,000 from sponsoring a soup supper, a fall carnival and a farmer's market meal.

Founded in 1988, Lang Diesel Inc. started in Hays, Kan., when Brian Lang, president, opened a repair shop out of his tool box.
