This spring has been called the wettest on record in the Corn Belt and other major growing regions of the U.S. and the pace of planting would seem to verify this claim. As of Sunday, May 26, corn planting in the U.S. is 32 days behind the 5 year average and soybeans are 37 days behind the 5 year average.
Today, the ag agency reported that 5% of the corn crop has been harvested, the same as a year ago for this date, and up slightly from the 3% 5 year average. Nearly all of harvest so far has taken place in four states: Texas (63%), North Carolina (43%), Kentucky (24%) and Tennessee (23%). A few of the bigger corn producing states have started harvesting (Illinois: 4%, Missouri: 12%), but overall little or no harvesting has taken place in Iowa, the largest producer of corn.
It looks like farmers in the Corn Belt are finally able to get into their fields and get some seeds in the ground, but current progress is lagging both last year on this date, as well as the 5 year average. But they’re starting to catch up.
The harvesting of U.S. corn and soybean crops is behind schedule compared to last year’s pace and the 5-year average, according to USDA’s Crop Progress report for Oct. 15.
