MARYSVILLE, Kan., May 28, 2013 — A farm equipment dealership and construction supply business west of Marysville were heavily damaged by a tornado late Monday in western Marshall County. At least 30 homes were also damaged and livestock killed, according to Marshall County officials, in a path from Second Road in Washington County northeast to the intersection of Eighth and Juniper roads in Marshall County.

Shortly after storm spotters were alerted about 9:30 p.m Monday, the Marshall County sheriff’s dispatcher notified officers of a tornado spotted in west-central Marshall County. The storm destroyed buildings at the site of Precision Truss and caused extensive damage at Oregon Trail Equipment, a John Deere dealership located along U.S. Highway 36 several miles west of Marysville.

Officials said early Tuesday that vehicle traffic was a concern and asked that people not drive along U.S. Highway 36 west of Marysville to check out the damage unless they live in the area or are going to help with recovery efforts.

Debris was visible strewn along Highway 36 near midnight Monday as emergency vehicles’ lights flashed around the damage scene.

Earlier Monday night, sirens sounded intermittently in Marysville as the storm's power became clear.

Afterward, power lines and tree limbs were reported down in some spots west and north of Marysville. A large tree was mangled in west Marysville.

Marysville Fire Department was dispatched to the Union Pacific yard office in northwest Marysville to investigate a report of a natural gas odor after the storm had passed.

More severe storms are forecast for Marshall County in the next few days, according to the National Weather Service.
