In November 2019, Frank and Mike Lessiter welcomed Paul Wallem, an 88-year-old retired International Harvester exec and 2-store dealer-principal, to our Wisconsin offices. After a quick meeting, they all jumped into Frank’s Grand Cherokee for a visit with Case IH executive Scott Harris in Racine, Wis., a spot that Wallem had not visited in 33 years.

Why Did International Harvester Break Up?

From the unique perspective of an IH executive and later a dealer, Paul Wallem’s new book covers how a 150-year-old iconic farm equipment brand lost its footing, and the worries of dealers and farmers over their investments and futures.
The Breakup examines the reasons International Harvester failed in 1984 (and its merger with J.I. Case), with IH dealers and customers weighing in with their opinions. Interviews were conducted throughout the U.S., Canada and Sweden, and include discussions with former IH and Case IH company personnel involved in the transition.
