Update from U.S. Drought Monitor Ahead of Planting Season

March 8, 2025

Drought conditions across top corn growing states were released March 6 in a report by the U.S. Drought Monitor (USDM).

As 8 percent of Texas was experiencing D4 exceptional drought conditions, D3 extreme drought conditions were reported in South Dakota (9%), Nebraska (8%), North Dakota (5%) and Colorado at 1 percent. 

Severe conditions were reported in: Michigan (22%), Pennsylvania (13%), North Carolina (11%), Tennessee (8%), Minnesota (7%), Missouri (2%), Iowa and Illinois both 1 percent. 

Additionally, moderate D1 drought conditions were reported in the following states: Wisconsin (51%), Indiana (33%), Kansas (25%) and one percent in Ohio. Kentucky was free from draught stress in the report.
