65% of Corn in ‘Good’ and ‘Excellent’ Condition; 67% of Soybeans Planted

Corn planting could be completed in the next several days if the weather holds for the remainder of this week.

According to the latest report from USDA, 91% of corn acres were planted as of May 28. This is a 7% gain compared to a week ago and it’s only 2% behind last year’s pace and the 5-year average.

So far, 73% of the corn crop has emerged vs. 75% last year on this day and the 5-year average of 75%. The current emergence represents a 19% gain vs. a week earlier.

This report also includes the corn crop’s condition for this first time in 2017. USDA rates corn as 8% excellent, 57% good, 28% fair, 6% poor and 1% very poor for this date. This puts it slightly behind last year at this point when 12% was rated as excellent, 60% good, 24% fair, 3% poor and 1% very poor.

Significant progress was made in soybean plantings in the past week. As of Sunday, 67% of soybeans were in the ground, up from 53% a week earlier. The current pace remains somewhat behind last year’s 71%, but only 1% behind the 5-year average for this date.

USDA is also reporting the 37% of soybean acres have emerged vs. 42% a year ago and the 5-year average of 40%
