CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (March 12, 2010) — Peter Holt’s
connection with the land is part of his family’s legacy.
His great grandfather developed the first track-type tractor, which he called a Caterpillar.
As CEO of Holt Cat, the largest Caterpillar dealership in the United States, Peter Holt has had many opportunities to further worthy causes in his hometown of San Antonio. And he has seized many of those opportunities.
But as a hunter and anglers, his love of the outdoors has compelled him to give back to the land. At the governor’s pleasure, Holt has served on the Texas Parks & Wildlife Commission since 2003. His term expires in 2011.
For this and many other reasons, Peter Holt is the Rotary Club of Corpus Christi Harvey Weil Sportsman Conservationist for 2010, a distinction that labels him a man for all seasons.
Holt is scheduled to be honored with this prestigious award, along with one of Port Aransas’ favorite son Tony Amos, this years Harvey Weil Professional Conservationist recipient.
A conservation fundraiser banquet is scheduled for April 10 at the Welder Wildlife Refuge near Sinton. This 12th annual event celebrates the spirit and legacy of the late sportsman/conservationist Harvey Weil, a Corpus Christi maritime attorney. Proceeds from the event help fund wildlife and fisheries conservation and youth programs.
During his ongoing tenure as chairman of the commission, TPW Executive Director Carter Smith said Holt has fought to provide greater funding for state parks and become known as a premier campaigner for greater public access to the outdoors.
“He is also both an exemplary land steward of his own ranches,” Smith said. “The state of Texas is fortunate to have his vision and leadership as the chair of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission.”
Holt has been instrumental in the acquisition of land for conservation and recreation while holding the department accountable regarding policy issues. Among his goals Holt has striven to improve the quality of science behind management decisions to preserve and enhance the state’s wildlife, fisheries and natural habitats.
And he does this while juggling responsibilities as Chairman, CEO and principal owner of the San Antonio Spurs NBA team, promoting business and cultural relationships between the United States and Mexico and serving as fundraising chairman for an education center to be built at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall in Washington, D.C.
Holt’s other memberships and affiliations include the World Presidents’ Organization, the Free Trade Alliance of San Antonio, the San Antonio Economic Development Foundation, the Red McCombs School of Business at the University of Texas at Austin. the Texas State Aquarium, Bexar County Performing Arts Center, San Antonio United Way,
He’s in the Texas Business Hall of Fame and was awarded the Woodrow Wilson Award for Public Service. Holt is a military veteran who served as an infantryman in Vietnam and was awarded a Silver Star, three Bronze Stars for Valor and a Purple Heart.
